Best of Appellation Work Completed in Ohio
August 26th, 2009
Appellation America, the web-based wine media focused to define the regional diversity of North American wine, through their Best of Appellation evaluation program has just released findings from its first work with the State of Ohio. Working in conjunction with the Ohio Grape Industries Committee INSERT INTO "news" VALUES (OGIC) resident wineries, over 70 unique wines were submitted from 18 Ohio wineries, many focused to the Lake Erie AVA and northeast Ohio. rnrnThe Best of Appellation program is uniquely designed to isolate regional type to wines originating from the place of viticulture rather than simply scoring a varietal wine against same varietals. A Chardonnay grown in Lake Erie AVA will taste to a unique profile of that place, rather than being compared to Chardonnay from California. rnrnOhio wineries, in cooperation with the OGIC, were encouraged to submit samples of their wines. As a part of the industries' strategic planning process, the OGIC entered 2009 with a desire to engage third party validation of Ohio wines and the Best of Appellation program fit that tactical plan precisely. rnrnThe findings have been impressive, but not surprising to Clark Smith, head of Best of Appellation evaluation at Appellation America. A nationally respected enology consultant, Smith has long understood the quality of wines of the Midwest and relished the opportunity to evaluate a regional sampling from Ohio. A total of 64 wines were elevated to Best of Appellation status. Smith offered that “because they have been making wine for over 100 years in Ohio, winemakers have learned how to tame the intense aromatics and acids creating balance in their wines”. rnrnThe Best of Appellation process deploys trained enologists rather than wine critics in their evaluations, with an intense focus to objectively define the varietal type profile to be found in a region. This finding is ultimately recorded in a vehicle called the ‘Blue Book,' which is an ongoing compendium of wine profiles to be found in a given region or AVA. Much work remains to fully record the breadth of each of Ohio's 5 AVAs. Efforts to gain a greater understanding of each of these regions will follow over time. rn |
